HURRICANE INFORMATION,
TRACKING & TIPS
 
 
 
Hurricane season in the caribbean region begins June 1st and ends November 30th.
 
A tropical depression becomes a tropical storm and is given a name when sustained winds reach 39 to 73 mph (34 to 63 knots).  Some wind gusts may reach hurricane velocity of 74 mph although sustained winds are less.  The storm now has a distinct rotation of winds arouns a centre of low pressure.
 
Hurricane - Violent storm with sustained winds of at least 74 mph, blowing counter clockwise around a calm center of low pressure.
 
Hurricane alert -When a tropical storm poses a possible threat to an area, a "HURRICANE ALERT" will be announced.  This simply means - BE ON GUARD - Pay ATTENTION!
 
Hurricane watch - This is issued when there is  a possibility that a hurricane may threaten the area, but not immedicately.
 
Hurricane WARNING - A hurricane is expected to strike your area within 24 hours or less with sustained winds of 74 mph and/or dangerous high tides and waves.
 
Hurricane EYE The relatively calm area near the centre of the storm.  It can last for several minutes to an hour or more.  This period sometimes ends suddenly as winds return from the opposite direction, often with greater force.  DO NOT GO OUT in the EYE of the storm as winds can increase to hurricane force in seconds.
